Mothers Day & Healing the Mother Wound

Kia ora Whanau!

I am studying this year with a group of amazing somatic practitioners and this week we were all talking about Mothers Day. It wasn’t exactly your usual Mothers Day chat, we were discussing the Mother wound and how doing somatic release work is so beneficial to building better relationships. This is because our relationship with our mother builds the foundations for our relationship with ourselves - so when we work on this we can experience massive transformation and growth that leads to improving our relationships to ourselves as well as everyone in our lives.

I invite you to reflect and take a moment with your journal to write a few notes about your relationship with your mother, what are the things you love about her and more importantly - what are the things that aren’t so perfect or are unpleasant. Mothers are humans too and we all make mistakes! It is likely that if your mother did something that you didn’t like, it was a result of it happening to her when she was a young child so she will have been repeating a cycle of behaviour. I am sure your reflections will be likely be mixed, some incredible memories, some obvious wounds, some that we avoid and some that might be really sad.

When we do deep inner work we get to intimately understand and release the trauma around our early developmental relationships. We get to understand how and why these patterns occurred, we learn that forgiveness is a gift for us and we also develop some amazing tools to stop unconsciously repeating the pattern of behaviour so that we don’t pass them on to our kids and thus heal the lineage. We can also heal relationships with our loved ones whether they are here with us or not.

It doesn’t mean that you are immediately going to have a perfect relationship or you may not even want that - but it does allow some incredible healing, growth and perspective.
